Echinacea pallida 👇🏼🌿

It’s is a striking addition to any garden with its distinctive long, drooping petals and robust central cone.

Thriving best in full sun, it’s well-suited to the UK’s temperate climate. Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly to establish, then enjoy its drought-tolerant nature.

It’s seen here at ‘The Farm House’, a Tom Stuart-Smith designed garden that we shared some photos from earlier this week. The jewel in the crown is the Prairie Garden (swipe to see) enclosed by beautiful two meter high Cotswold stone walling and seen here in the Spring before the strong colours of Eupatorium maculatum ‘riesenschirm’’ and Miscanthus ‘Malepartus’ do their thing.

Deadheading spent echinacea blooms encourages further flowering, extending its display from early to late summer. Perfect for pollinator-friendly gardens, it attracts bees and butterflies, enhancing biodiversity. 🐝

Meet Matt, he works with us at @johnstonelandscapes on a freelance basis, but he’s 100% part of the team.

He’s a machine specialist, there’s nothing he doesn’t know about some of our bigger machinery and he works with us across a number of our major projects.

So when it was his birthday last week and we were onsite together at ‘The Piggeries’ the team made sure to get him a cake (and especially enjoyed watching him cut it and share it out on their lunch break!)

Every one of the people we work with is special to us, no one is ever just a contractor or a freelancer, you’re part of the Johnstone team and that’s what makes it so special here 🥰🌿

This Tom Stuart-Smith garden is bursting with his signature perennial planting👇🏼🌿

‘The Farm House’, Gloucestershire is one of our previously completed projects. It’s jam packed with stunning perennial planting and supported by multi-stem trees.

Veronicastrum virginicum ‘ Album’ provides height in southern borders, and Buxus ‘sempervirens’ topiary domes punctuate much of the planting.

Allium ’sphaerocephalon’ and Allium ‘christophii’ bloom in late spring to early summer and the dried seed heads last for months providing further structure throughout the remainder of the year.

Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ is another regular to the garden and lines pathways in abundance!

Steal this plant combination 🌿👇🏼

Earlier this week we shared our previously completed project ‘The North Wiltshire Garden’, so we thought we’d share a deeper dive into some of the planting.

Here Knautia macedonic and Nepeta work harmoniously together and create a beautifully wild place to sit in the garden on that light blue bench.

Knautia macedonica, often called Macedonian scabious, boasts vibrant, wine-red blooms that add a splash of deep color to any garden from early summer to Autumn. This perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, reaching up to 2 feet in height. It’s a pollinator magnet, so expect visits from bees and butterflies!

Nepeta, commonly known as catmint, is beloved for its aromatic, gray-green foliage and soft lavender flowers. It’s incredibly easy to grow, preferring full sun and dry, well-drained soils. Nepeta blooms from late spring through late summer, and cutting it back midseason can encourage a second bloom and maintain its bushy form.

💧🌿 Care Tips: Both plants are drought-tolerant once established, making them perfect for low-water gardens. Deadhead Knautia to prolong blooming and trim back Nepeta after its first flush of flowers to keep it neat and prolific.

Plant these beauties together for a garden that’s both a feast for the eyes and a haven for wildlife. 🐝

Located within the vale of the River Avon, this is one of our favourite smaller scale projects that we’ve completed.

Following an extension at the rear of the house, the previous garden no longer worked or made sense. What was needed was a complete re-think on structure and shape – with plenty of space for outside entertaining and pathways that created a journey amongst the planting.

As the client was a keen gardener, we were able make this a ‘gardener’s garden’ through a comprehensive planting scheme. (Though our recent post last week reminded her to get out and tackle the weeding 😉 more on our stories)

Herbaceous perennials were combined with grasses that are punctuated with strong, feature plants including multi-stemmed crab apple and clipped Columnar hornbeam. We also installed LED lighting to create atmosphere and drama at night.

How to maximise Allium season 🌿👇🏼

Here at our previously completed project ‘The Farm House’ you can see Allium sphaerocephalon & Astrantia major working harmoniously in the sunshine. But how can you ensure you get the most out of your alliums? As they start to open nice and early this spring in the UK?

Boost your allium displays by planting in full sun and well-draining soil to encourage maximum blooms. Extend their beauty by allowing spent flowers to remain; their architectural forms add interest and support biodiversity.

For longer-lasting displays, water consistently during the growing season and apply a high-potassium fertilizer after blooming to nourish the bulbs for next year.
